Friday, June 19, 2020 - Letter from Father Stirniman and Father Horton
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Starting this Sunday, June 21st, most of our Masses will be inside our church buildings! This is an exciting development! We will be able to be together in a more “normal” fashion with our Brother and Savior, Jesus Christ! And for those of you who do not yet wish to venture back inside a church building, but who would nonetheless like to attend a Mass with your fellow Catholic brothers and sisters, we continue to offer an outside community Mass as well. Additionally, we will continue to live-stream some of these Masses for those who cannot or who choose not to attend either type of community Mass.
Our Sunday, June 21st Mass schedule is as follows: 9:00am Mass INDOORS at St Patrick, Wapella; 9:00 a.m. Mass OUTDOORS at Historic St. Patrick; 11:00 a.m. Mass INDOORS at Historic St. Patrick; 11:00 a.m. Mass INDOORS at Holy Trinity.
Please observe the following guidelines for attending an INSIDE Mass at any of our 3 church buildings:
-Please wear a mask
-Please use the 1 designated entrance/exit for each of our 3 churches: North Doors of Holy Trinity; South Doors of Historic St Patrick; West Doors of St Patrick, Wapella
-Use hand-sanitizer as you enter the church
-Please wait to be ushered to a pew.
-Please maintain ‘social-distancing’ as best you can.
-Since a collection cannot be taken at the pews, a basket will be located at/near the sanitization stand (see 3rd bullet under Holy Communion below) where you can place your offering.
Holy Communion
-Holy Communion will be distributed first inside and then outside the church building after Mass concludes.
-As an usher lets you out of your pew, please take all your belongings (you won’t return to your pew).
-Immediately before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, please obtain hand-sanitizer located on a stand at the front, as you are in line.
-After the Host is put in your hand, please step away, to left or right---about 8 feet---remove your mask, consume the Host, and proceed out of the church.
-Please take at least a few minutes of thanksgiving to Jesus for the generous gift of Himself in the Eucharist.
A few other important things to know: Distribution of Holy Communion will take place at the outside of each church building after distributing inside the buildings; there will be bathrooms available at all 3 of our churches (for both inside as well as outside Masses); at some of these Masses there will be music provided---but, strangely enough---I ask you not to sing, as it projects your breath much farther than simply talking/responding in normal manner.
Please continue to pray for our society as well as for our Church throughout this re-opening phase. Also, continue to join with Jesus and with your Catholic Faith community at the “source and summit of the Christian life” (the celebration of Holy Mass) ... in whatever way you feel most comfortable (ie, inside Mass, outside Mass or live-streamed Mass). And be assured of our daily prayers for you and your family!

Fr Stirniman & Fr Horton

Saturday, June 13 - Message from Deacon Todd...
A small team of parishioners has recently been assembled who have been trained for the initial re-opening tasks for our parish. They will be greeters, ushers, and church cleaning / disinfecting folks. We will be asking for more volunteers as time goes on to carry out the roles necessary for future public Masses.
Protocol for coming inside the church:
---A face mask / covering must always be worn (excluding age 2 and under). There are some available if you don't have one.
---Social distancing should be maintained from those not in your household while in the Communion line. Blue tape on the floor indicates where to stand.
---A self-serve hand sanitizer stand is positioned in the aisle closer to the front of the church, which you must use before receiving Holy Communion.
---Only family members/households will be permitted to sit together.
---Please cooperate with ushers who direct seating. People will be seated from the front of the church to back, with necessary space between people / families. Ushers will also dismiss each pew for Communion FOLLOWING the Mass - then you will immediately exit the church, so take any belongings with you as you approach distribution of Communion.
THIS IS NEW AND DIFFERENT (AND CHALLENGING) FOR ALL OF US, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT AND GIVE GRACE WHERE NEEDED.

If you've seen the Catholic Post article about churches reopening on June 6 (and even if you haven't), please be patient with us. Many details have to be attended to before we can open, and it is quite possible that we (and many other parishes) won't be ready to open quite that quickly. Keep us and each other in your prayers, and offer special prayers for those who are doing the work to prepare us to open.

May 27 - New Schedule at St. Patrick, Wapella
(this schedule now ended) HOLY COMMUNION will be offered.... --- FRIDAY EVENINGS after the livestreamed 5:30pm Mass - around 6:00pm --- SUNDAY MORNINGS after the livestreamed 10:00am Mass - around 10:40am Distribution of the Holy Eucharist will continue from the driveway or garage of the parish rectory (depending on the weather). |
Outdoor Mass to begin on Wednesday, May 20
by Fr. Horton
We have received permission to go ahead with Mass outdoors. But, because of the rainy forecast through Tuesday evening and because we haven’t had a chance to test the setup under live conditions, we are not able to begin offering Mass outdoors until WEDNESDAY morning. It is important to keep the celebration of Mass dignified, and we aren’t confident we can make that happen in time for Sunday. It’s also TBD what we will do on other rainy days.
KEY POINTS regarding OUTDOOR MASS CELEBRATIONS
-Mass will be celebrated outside at Historic St. Patrick. The altar will be in front of (or in, if weather makes it necessary) the garage. The Mass times will remain as they are on our current quarantine schedule.
-Communion will be distributed after Mass as we are doing currently.
-Please note that restrooms will NOT be available.
-Please turn off the engine in your car.
-It is very important that you remain in your cars during Mass (this being one of the conditions under which we are allowed to proceed).
-You will be able to follow the livestream if your phone allows you to do that, but be aware that there is a substantial lag (about 5 seconds) before what’s happening in front of you comes through your phone. You will also have the option of tuning your FM radio to 102.1, which should have no delay.
-If you are using your phone, please use your phone data and not the parish Wi-fi. Using the Wi-fi will put an unpredictable stress on the system we use for streaming.
-Larger vehicles (trucks, vans, SUVs, etc.) please park toward the back so that you do not block the view of those in smaller cars.
Stay tuned for more details.

May 15, 2020 Letter from Father Stirniman
to St. Patrick Parishioners
Hello, Fellow Parishioners of St Patrick, Wapella and Holy Trinity and Historic St Patrick,
I am sending this email today to tell you I am very pleased that as of Wednesday, May 13th we now have the privilege of offering Holy Communion to you and other Catholics, at varying times, at varying locations! We priests are offering Holy Communion immediately following the various Masses we celebrate and livestream alone (unfortunately!) inside our churches. It is now every day of the week we offer Holy Communion!
For you to know our Mass schedule and the general directions for the proper and reverent reception of Holy Communion, please check out our websites: hsp-ht.org and www.saintpatrickwapella.org. Additionally, it is very important you tune in to the livestreamed Mass itself (if at all possible) to know with certainty where and how Holy Communion will be distributed after the particular livestreamed Mass, since there are many variables which affect outside distribution of Holy Communion after any given Mass. Also, every time at the sites where Holy Communion is distributed, there will be individuals to assist you, to give you hand-sanitizer, etc; please follow their helpful directions.
Additionally---particularly when planning on receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion---please tune in to the livestreamed Mass itself and participate for the sake of giving the Lord the sacrifice of your worship, your love, your time, and your full attention as He gives you His very Self at the Mass and especially in Holy Communion!
Just as a kindly reminder...Fr. Horton and I continue offering the Sacrament of Confession (along with Eucharistic Adoration) 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 3:30-4:30pm in the parking lot of Holy Trinity Parish Center. Please consider availing yourself of this greatly-underutilized sacrament, not only to rid yourself of sin and to grow in holiness, but also to be properly disposed to receive Jesus, Our Lord, in Holy Communion.
May our Eucharistic Lord bless you and your family during this time of the global pandemic, blessing you with His loving, faithful, and true presence!

The wait is over: Bishop allows parishes to offer Communion outside churches
By: Jennifer Willems - May 14, 2020 - Entire Featured Article at The Catholic Post
By: Jennifer Willems - May 14, 2020 - Entire Featured Article at The Catholic Post
... Father Jeffrey Stirniman, pastor, and Father Geoff Horton, parochial vicar, were among many priests around the Diocese of Peoria to offer Communion to their parishioners as soon as possible after Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, said parishes were permitted to do that. While he left it up to each pastor to determine how this would happen, the bishop stipulated that the distribution should take place outside of church, with great caution to protect all concerned.
“One of the things that we were most concerned about is distributing Holy Communion in a reverent way and not just going through the mechanics, because it’s what the Lord deserves and what we need. The world needs more reverence,” Father Stirniman said. “This is the start of something wonderful — the closest thing we can get to the Mass with our people.”... ... Before Mass, Father Horton said, “We are almost as excited as you are to finally be able to distribute after all this time.” He told The Post that although they have served parishioners by livestreaming Masses while churches have been closed to protect people against the COVID-19 pandemic, he was reminded of the Scripture passage from Matthew when Jesus asks, “Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread?” “I feel like I’ve been giving my people stones for 10 weeks and I know that’s not the case — we’re doing what we can do,” Father Horton said. “But it’s so nice to be able to hear and answer what they’ve been asking for. It’s just so wonderful.” |

March 12, 2020 - Suspension of Communion Services and Masses in Nursing Homes and Home Visits to the Elderly
I think it best to immediately suspend all Communion Services and Masses and Home Visits / Communion Calls for the time being. Since the most vulnerable are the elderly---especially those who have underlying health conditions---I do not think this is an over-reaction. (The majority of coronavirus deaths in the US are residents of a nursing home in the state of Washington.) Please contact those who need to know about this temporary suspension: nursing home contact persons; EMHCs; homebound parishioners / others, etc. Fr. Horton and I will continue to make emergency visits to hospitals, nursing facilities, homes, etc. as needed and we will be equipped with masks as well as hand-sanitizer. Let’s all pray for those who will be most impacted by this current pandemic virus!
